How to Choose the Right Collar for your Dog

Choosing a collar for your furry friend can be hard work! There are so many options on the market, so if you’re a new dogmum or dad, shopping for your pup can be super daunting. We’ve made your job easy by giving you our top tips for choosing the right collar to ensure you’re both happy with the choice.

1. Opt for comfort

Above everything else, comfort is the most important thing when it comes to choosing a collar. Your dog wears their collar 24 hours a day, so they need something that is comfortable, and doesn’t irritate them. They can’t tell you if they find their collar uncomfortable, so it’s up to you to choose something that works for them. If your dog has a small, delicate neck, you wouldn’t select a heavy, bulky collar that weighs them down. If you choose a leather collar, opt for a light-weight material that’s soft to touch. Spending the money on a high-quality collar made of the finest materials will ensure your dog's comfort.

2. Match their personality

This is the funnest part of collar shopping! Your dog's collar should reflect their own personality so everyone else who meets them knows exactly who they are and what they're about. If your pooch is social and outgoing, choose a bright colour or pattern. Alternatively, go with a more subtle and elegant leather option if they're all about class. 3. Size matters

You wouldn't believe how many of our customers select the wrong size for their pup and have to swap it! ( We too were guilty of this a long time ago when we bought our first collar online for Romeo and assumed he was a Size Small only to find it was too big for him! ) To save the hassle on your end, measure your dog's size before making the purchase. As with clothing, every brand has slightly different sizing, so be sure to check the Size Guide measurements when making the purchase.
To measure your dog's size, use a measuring tape, or use a piece of string to take the measurement, and then place it on a ruler. When your dog has the collar on, there should be enough room to slip two fingers between the collar and their neck.

4. You don’t need to compromise on style

Gone are the days where the only choices you have for a collar are a metal chain or a collar made of fluro nylon! Now, there are SO many collars on the market that are stylish as well as practical and durable. Choose something that you're proud to show off at the dog park. Their collar should be a reflection of their personality mixed with your style.

5. Practicality

If your dog loves getting muddy in the park, or swimming at the beach, there's no point buying an expensive material that isn't waterproof. Choose a collar based on their lifestyle.

6. You can have more than one!

You don’t have just one outfit for every event, so why should your pooch? A lot of dog-parents have an ‘everyday’ collar for when your dog goes on outdoor adventures, as well as a ‘dress’ collar that they wear for special occasions or Sunday brunches. This way, you don’t have to worry about their gorgeous leather collar being covered in mud!
